Agribusiness
Primary production is a major contributor to the regional economy, with much of the Shire boasting high quality agricultural land, which Council is committed to protecting from urban encroachment.
A varied seasonal climate, rich river flat soil, abundant lakes, central location and reasonable land prices provide for prime grazing land and suitable conditions for agribusiness development. Due to the vast amount of affordable and available land, Murrindindi Shire is home to numerous award-winning beef cattle farms and is renowned across the country for its premium quality Angus beef. Supporting the industry and operating as the hub for livestock trade is the Yea Saleyards. The yards hold 3000 head of weaner cattle or 2,500 head of grown cattle with sales held monthly. The sector is well serviced by regional processing facilities and transport services.
In recent years the area has experienced a diversification in agriculture, including the breeding of alpaca, deer and goats and substantial table egg production.
Opportunities for growth and investment are abundant and these exist in a location with a strong sense of the importance of its rural character and amenity in this unique and attractive region on Melbourne’s northern boundary.
